ALAN MILLIKEN JR. Obituary

MILLIKEN JR.

ALAN

"He did it his way."

Alan Milliken Jr. passed away peacefully, in Oakmont, PA, on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the age of 92. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, on December 20, 1932, Alan was Pittsburgh proud, a lifelong fan of the Steelers and Pirates, through thick and thin. Fiercely independent, endlessly curious, and always marching to the beat of his own drum, he lived a life filled with enterprise and invention.

He served in the Army, during the Korean War, from 1954-1956. After leaving military service, he received an accounting degree at Robert Morris University.

Brick was in Alan's blood. His father founded the family business, Milliken Brick, and Alan proudly served as its president for many years. He reimagined the business and continued the family business with vision and tenacity.

Over the decades, the Milliken name became synonymous with brick and stone throughout the Pittsburgh region; woven into its streets, homes, schools, and buildings. His sons, Homer Alan and Michael, worked alongside him in their younger years, continuing the family tradition. For more than a century, Milliken Brick stood as a permanent piece of Pittsburgh's story, and Alan's leadership helped ensure that legacy endured.

He was an entrepreneur through and through, always full of ideas, many wild, some lasting. He dreamt up a three-wheeled electric car called the "Li'l Bugger," tried mushroom farming in the basement, and at various times, owned a laundromat, a pizza shop, and those iconic stamp machines from the 1970s. He loved math and strategy, which fueled his passion for sports betting and horse racing; he even developed a roulette system. Alan was also the entrepreneurial force behind Whiskey Dick's Bar in Pittsburgh's Strip District, which he ran with his son, Michael. A lively place, the bar reflected Alan's unfiltered personality and penchant for the unexpected.

He worked seven days a week well into his eighties, relishing every challenge and opportunity that came his way. He also famously drove most of his life without a license; a quiet (and sometimes not-so-quiet) rebellion that reflected his flair for independent thinking.

Though his life had twists and turns, Alan gave generously in unexpected ways. At age 70, he adopted his youngest daughter, Ellie, and formed a deep loving bond with her. He had a remarkable gift for listening and a keen interest in people, offering his full attention, sharp insights, always with a twinkle in his eye.

Alan was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eileen Hyland Milliken, whom he married in Las Vegas at The Little White Chapel. They shared many years and memories.

He is survived by his children from his marriage to the late Barbara Walters Milliken, Terri Milliken, Homer Alan Milliken III, Pamala Temple (Milliken), Michael Milliken (Amy); daughter, Ellie Milliken; and by his grandchildren, Terrie's children, Sarah Mayer (Barry), Maria and Melissa Lucjak, Pamala's child, Emerson Temple, Michael's children, Chloe and Van Milliken; and great-grandson Jaxson Mayer.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 10 AM-11 AM, followed by a service at 11 AM, at ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES INC., 378 Maryland Avenue, Oakmont, PA 15139. Interment to follow at Sunset View Cemetery (also known as Riverview Memorial Park) in Penn Hills.
