ALBERT JOSEPH

Albert Joseph Zangrilli, Jr., a fixture in the Pittsburgh legal community, died at his home in Oakland, on Wednesday, from cancer. He was 85.

Al was born in 1940, to the late Albert J Zangrilli, Sr. and Regina D Zangrilli. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1958 as an Eagle Scout and accomplished athlete on the Vikings' powerhouse running teams of that era. He headed west to college, graduating from the University of Notre Dame, in 1963. Having entered the Congregation of the Holy Cross as an undergraduate, he earned a Master of Arts in theology from Holy Cross College in 1967, before leaving formation to briefly teach and to participate in the civil rights movement. An opportunity to apply his theological foundation to an amicus brief that the American Catholic Bishops submitted in support of Loving vs. Virginia (1967), in which the U.S Supreme Court in a landmark decision struck down a law prohibiting interracial marriage, inspired him to attend law school and he graduated from Cornell in 1972.

At the age of 32, Al embarked on a legal career that would span more than half a century, remaining active until shortly before his passing. As an attorney, Al practiced civil law, particularly municipal and commercial litigation, at Yukevich, Marchetti, Fischer, and Zangrilli. He served as a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association (ACBA) Court Rules Committee for almost 50 years and was a member of the ACBA's Solicitors' Section, of which he previously served as Chair.

Al blended his love of the law with politics and his Catholic faith in serving as president of the St. Thomas More Society. A committed Democrat, he served as the 4th Ward Committee Chair and was recognized by the Allegheny County Democratic Committee, where he briefly served as Solicitor, with the Gialloreto Award in 2017. He was a regular at the former Pittsburgh Athletic Association, often frequenting its handball courts, and served multiple terms on its Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Jewish Community Center, the Notre Dame Club of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Golf Club, the University Club, and a Life Member of the Teutonia Männerchor.

In addition to his beloved wife of nearly 48 years, Ursula, Al is survived by his children, Albert (Sarah) of Sterling, VA, Mary (David Bornside) of Squirrel Hill and Tess (Chris Thomas) of Clarksville, MD; grandchildren, Alivia, Albert and Eloise; brother, David (Susan) of Salt Lake City; and nephews, Michael (Portia), also of Salt Lake City and Mark of New York City; and his cousin, Daniel (Dorothy) of Dormont and their children, Daniel, Jr. (Sarah) of Pittsburgh and Beth Ann of Los Angeles. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by cousins, Armand Zangrilli and William Zangrilli.

Visitation will be held at the WALTER J. ZALEWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 216 44th Street, Lawrenceville, on Thursday, August 21, 2025, from 6-8 p.m. and Friday, August 22, 2025, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 10 a.m. Entombment to follow at Calvary Cemetery in the east end. Remembrances may be made to a charity of one's choice.
