AMELIA "MILLIE"

Amelia "Millie" Ruben, age 81, of Indiana Twp., passed away peacefully at UPMC St. Margaret on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of 60 years to Gary Ruben; devoted mother of Eric Ruben and Nicole Ruben Sokol (Doug); proud grandmother of Ashley, Alex, and Amanda Sokol; and dear sister of Bill Harnish and Herbert Harnish (Angie).

Millie approached her work with dedication and a genuine care for others. In her early years, she held roles in both the medical community and real estate, reflecting her strong work ethic and willingness to take on new challenges. She later found her professional home as a secretary in the Allegheny Intermediate Unit where she supported students, families, and staff with patience, warmth, and reliability. Colleagues and friends remember her with deep affection. After retiring, she remained active in her community, serving students in the Fox Chapel Area School District.

Outside of work, Millie created a home filled with warmth and humor. She kept an exceptionally neat household. Cleaning help once joked it was the cleanest home they had ever worked in. She was an excellent cook who loved bringing her family together for meals, often with showtunes playing in the background as Sunday dinner simmered on the stove. She enjoyed browsing farmers market-style shops, taking little excursions with friends, and traveling -- sometimes on spontaneous weekend outings, other times on longer trips shared with family.

Millie was an avid reader who enjoyed challenging herself and friends with online word games. She also loved playing rummy-style card games with friends. She adored her dog, Molly, who was rarely far from her side. During warmer months, Millie could often be found in her favorite porch chair, book in hand, savoring the weather and the quiet. She believed in dressing with care and quality -- never flashy, but always put together -- reflecting the quiet self-respect with which she moved through the world.

Millie held a steady belief that everything happened for a reason, a perspective that allowed her to remain calm during uncertain or difficult moments and to offer gentle comfort to others. She faced more than her share of health challenges over the years, yet she met each one with strength and resolve. Even during her second battle with cancer, she worked for a time at a rehabilitation facility because she wanted to help others in their recovery. Her family remembers her as exceptionally tough, resilient, and caring -- qualities that endeared her to friends, neighbors, and colleagues alike. Her family especially remembers her tackling one outing that she would never have chosen for herself, smiling and saying it was simply "one of those things we do for our children." To her, family was everything, and acts of service were her love language.

The family will receive friends Sunday, January 11 from 1 p.m. until the 5 p.m. funeral service at the WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME, Aspinwall. Burial will be private at Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Indiana Twp.
