ANN GALLAGHER

Ann Gallagher Kim, age 84, of Cranberry Twp., PA, passed away on July 26, 2026.

Born on April 14, 1942, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late John Herbert Gallagher, Sr. and Mary Frances Gallagher née Burns. She grew up in the Millvale/Shaler area and lived for many years in the suburb of Penn Hills.

Ann was a strong believer in higher education. She earned her Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry from Carlow College. She began her career and then continued her education; earning a Master's of Science in Earth and Planetary Science from University of Pittsburgh, a Master's of Science in Engineering Management from National Technological University and a PhD in Geochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.

Ann had a long and fulfilling career with the United States Bureau of Mines and Department of Energy as a Supervisory Physical Scientist. Her work included research, studies, and publications on acid mine drainage, the properties of coalbed methane that led to its use as an energy source, the location and monitoring abandoned mine fires, and the release of metals from coal byproducts. Ann held a patent for co-inventing a method to extinguish abandoned mine fires. After retirement, she enjoyed working as an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh teaching environmental science.

Outside of work, Ann devoted countless hours to the Girl Scouts of Southwestern Pennsylvania as a volunteer. She served in many roles; troop leader, service unit manager, leading a summer day camp in Penn Hills, training leaders, and Gold Award committee member. For decades, she greatly enjoyed mentoring many young girls in achieving their Gold Awards. Ann was also actively involved in the Crescent Hills neighborhood civic club where she met lifelong friends.

Left behind to cherish Ann's memory are her husband of 59 years, Paul W. Kim; her daughters, Kathy (John) Beiber, Jody (Chris) Geyer, and Kerry Lawson; grandchildren, Jonathan, Jillian, Kiersten, Katrina, Riley, Callen, Dean, and Ryan; sister, Mary Frances (Jim) Drake; sister-in-law, Dawn Gallagher; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ann was predeceased by her brother, John Herbert Gallagher, Jr.

Friends and family will be received from 2-4 PM on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the BOYLAN-GLENN-KILDOO FUNERAL HOME, 130 Wisconsin Ave., Cranberry Twp., PA 16066.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 3, 2026, at 10 AM at St Ferdinand Church - Divine Grace Parish, 2535 Rochester Rd., Cranberry Twp., PA 16066.

Donations may be made in Ann's memory to the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania.
