Barbara Humes Templeton, passed away at home early Thursday morning, April 24, 2025, attended to by her daughter and son-in-law. She was 89 years old.
She was born on a farm in Clarion County, PA, in February, 1936, the youngest of Roy and Ruby Humes's seven children. Orphaned at a young age, she was raised by two kindly aunts. She was predeceased by her six siblings. She loved them all, and she will be buried in the family gravesite in Hawthorne.
A nursing student at Presbyterian Hospital in Oakland, Barbara there met and soon married Irvin "Sonny" Templeton. In 1964, they moved to Ben Avon Heights, and there raised their three children and enjoyed the suburban life of the '60s and '70s.
At the end of last century, Barbara started her second act. Divorced and newly sober, she revived her 25 year dormant nursing skills, and took a rewarding but tough job as an inpatient detox and recovery nurse. She worked there until she was 76 years old.
She built a good life in Mars, PA, centered on work, sobriety, family, church and a little travel, all in the company of her longtime devoted partner, Sam Kovac.
Her body let her down in these last years, but her spirit and sharp mind endured. She remained devoted to her family, her faith, her cats (14 through the years), domestic order (14 plus vacuum cleaners through the years). She was (descriptions from three generations of family and friends) reliable in a crisis, generous, funny, sharply particular, strictly ordered, loyal and loving.
She was a beautiful person.
Barbara Humes Templeton is survived by her three children, Paul Templeton (married to Sandra, Asheville, NC), Lynn Templeton Maloney (married to Paul, Mars, PA) and Rand Templeton (married to Julia, Fort Worth, TX); eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be held in the fall, arrangements entrusted to SCHELLHAAS & SONS FUNERAL HOME, Sewickley.
Any donations may be given to an animal rescue service of one's choice.
