Age 100, of Penn Hills, died April 6, 2021. Beloved husband of the late Jane Marie (Kim) Hawkins; father to the late David Charles Hawkins, the late Mark Thomas Hawkins, Phillip Joseph Hawkins, Jane Christine "Chris" (Hawkins) Barido, and Paul Henry Kabera, née Hawkins. Charles was the last surviving child of the late Walter Scott Hawkins and Mary Margaret (Wren) Hawkins. Born in his grandmother's house on Mount Washington, Pittsburgh, on July 27, 1920, he spent his childhood in Pittsburgh, Wilkinsburg, and Braddock, before finally settling in present-day Penn Hills. Gifted with an aptitude for the physical sciences, Charles studied engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and worked as an engineer for major Pittsburgh-area firms, including Westinghouse Electric, Union Switch & Signal, Gulf Research, and PPG Industries. As he never lost his love of machinery, he could be spotted driving a farm tractor as late as his 99th year. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at 11 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Holy Family Parish, 825 Second Street, Verona, followed by Interment of his remains in the church cemetery.
