CLARK "CORK" HARTWELL

Of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully, on June 20, 2026, in the loving arms of his wife of 52 years, Mary, while listening to Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash singing "Girl From the North Country."

Born on September 9, 1951, he was the beloved child of Frances and Frederick Remington. Cork graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School. He earned his BA and EdD from Duquesne University. Cork taught in the Upper St. Clair School District and directed the International Baccalaureate program. After retiring, he became a professor in Duquesne University's Dept. of Education.

He had a great compassion for humanity near and far, taking multiple mission trips to Haiti, and serving lunches with Daily Bread on the North Side of Pittsburgh. Cork was a natural athlete, who loved all sports with a ball, particularly golf and tennis, although he would add that the more golf lessons he took, the worse his scores. He was a lover of oceans, an avid reader, a WWII history buff, enjoyed many genres of music, playing lead guitar for family singing, and appreciated impressionist art. He was known for his storytelling, his "Mark Twain-esque" sense of humor and entertaining Christmas letters.

With sparkling Irish eyes and a smile that lit up his face, Cork touched so many lives.

Most of all, he treasured his family and friends. In his final months, hearing from his children and grandchildren was the delight of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; and children, Evanda (Shelley), Grace (Charles), Alyssa (Jason); and grandchildren, Elijah, Isaiah, Clark, Ezra, Isla, Robi and Remi. He maintained a wonderfully close relationship with his older brother Tom and younger sister, Ginny, their spouses and children, Nancy, Tom, Alex, Sarah, Natalie and baby Eleanor; as well as Mary's sister, Ann, her husband, John; Cork and Mary's niece and nephew, Misty (Ray), and Giac, their father, Jack; and great-nephew, Jake.

Celebration of Life to be held at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, 3319 West Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15216, on August 1, 11 A.M. Reception immediately following service in Asbury Center on the ground floor of the church.
