CLYDE B.
Clyde B. Lamp, Jr., M.D. passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 4, 2024, at the age of 103. Born on August 18, 1921, in Courtney, PA, to Clyde B. Lamp, Sr., M.D. and Marie Ludwig Lamp, he grew up in Monongahela, PA. He was predeceased by his dear wife of 66 years, Jean Wyre Lamp, whom he met on a blind date at a Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University) dance while he was in medical school. Clyde was also predeceased by his sisters, Marie Lamp Stewart and Pauline Lamp Hornickel. He was the beloved father of son, C. Benjamin Lamp III and daughter, Jere Wyre Lamp, who survive him.
After his graduation from Shady Side Academy in 1939, Clyde attended Princeton University and then earned his M.D. at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After an internship at Mercy Hospital, he served his country from 1946 to 1948 as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, stationed at Manila in the Philippines. Upon his return stateside, he was appointed to the staff of Richland General Hospital in Richland, WA, serving the Hanford Project. From 1949 to 1952, his further medical training was as a Fellow in Otolaryngology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, simultaneously earning an M.S. in Otolaryngology from the University of Minnesota and serving as assistant staff in his fourth year at Mayo.
Always sincerely devoted to his patients' care, he engaged in private practice of otolaryngology in Pittsburgh, doing chiefly otology, from 1953 until his retirement in 1992. His hospital affiliations throughout the years were with Eye and Ear Hospital and Western Pennsylvania Hospital, as well as Suburban General Hospital early in his career. Additional roles included serving as Clinical Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, holding leadership positions in medical societies and at Eye and Ear Hospital, supervising students and residents at Eye and Ear, and giving decades of service at West Penn Hospital's Otology Clinic.
In retirement, Clyde enjoyed working in his yard, watching deer and other wildlife from his porch, reading, wintering in Sarasota, FL, and playing Scrabble at which he was hard to beat. He was a Master Mason and member of the Charleroi-Monongahela Lodge for 81 years, a member of the Masons' Scottish Rite for 25 years, and a Shriner.
Friends and relatives will be received on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 1-4 p.m. at THOMAS M. SMITH FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 930 Center Avenue, Blawnox, PA 15238.
