DANIEL ALEXANDER

Daniel A. Karaczun, 83, died unexpectedly, June 27, 2026. He was born August 10, 1942, in Bronx, NY, the son of Alex K. and Tanya D. (Coronetz) Karaczun.

Danny was raised in Chicago and grew up performing in his father's Russian dance ensemble. His family traveled to Arrow Park in Monroe, NY to spend summers with family and close friends. He graduated from Tooley High School in 1960. He attended a junior college in Chicago until being accepted into the Duquesne University Tamburitzans and relocating to Pittsburgh. It was at Duquesne that he met Joanne. It was love at first sight. They married three months after he graduated. They would have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on August 6. He was actively involved with The Pittsburgh Folk Festival for many years. Danny and Joanne founded Folkways International, a dance group that performed folk dances, specializing in Russian dance.

After graduating in 1966, he was employed by US Steel (Homestead Works) for 18 years. Though he had a variety of jobs over the years, he retired as Color Specialist for The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to spend more time with his grandkids. It gave him great joy to watch Ryan play baseball & hockey, Josh play baseball & basketball, and Mackenna dance, develop a natural talent for art, and watch her horseback ride. Along with their many academic achievements. In his retirement he worked part-time at his favorite job, Pro-Bikes, sparking a passion for cycling.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Walter, and son, Alex "Sasha". Surviving in addition to his wife, Joanne (Siket) Karaczun, is his brother, Alex A. (predeceased Marianne Karaczun) of Maine, his daughters, Danya Tierney and her husband Sean, Tonya Karaczun, and daughter-in-law, Nicole Molinaro. He was "Poppy" to his three grandchildren, Ryan Tierney, Josh Tierney, and Mackenna Karaczun, as well as nieces and nephews.
