"Friend to all, enemy to none." Dave was a kind man who made friends with everyone and always accepted everyone for who they were. He was a generous and funny guy who always helped anyone when he was able while making people laugh to share countless individual memories with everyone he encountered. He loved his family with all his heart; they always came first in his life. With provision and protection at the top of his character list he led by example for his sons on how to grow up to be men and displayed to his daughters on what to look for in a husband. His effortless sacrifice to teach his children good morals and values will have an eternal impact that will forever be instilled into his family for generations.


David was born in McKees Rocks on April 24, 1948, and passed away peacefully at UPMC hospital on November 29, 2025, surrounded by his family. He graduated from Stowe High School in1965 before joining the United States Army. His hard-working work ethic is unmatched as he began at a very young age racking pool balls at a local pool hall to make money to help his family with financial hardship. Dave could always be found from the age of 12 looking for odds and ends jobs to earn money to make a better way for the people around him. At the age of 18 he was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam. Upon arriving home, he found work in the steel industry working for multiple Steel Mills in the Pittsburgh area. For the next 40 or so years he would attend work as a steel worker achieving perfect attendance certificates for up to 30+ years without calling off a single day including the day of his massive heart attack in 2005 which resulted in multi bypass surgery. During this time, he found love, and they began building a family together that he relentlessly provided and protected to make their lives the best he could with everything he had.


He met Diane Cross in 1980. They had four children together and currently have six grandchildren while expected another in June 2026. They remained close friends after separating until the very last day of his life, always finding a way to be the best parents and grandparents they possibly could by continuously making good memories together as a family.


He was preceded in death by his oldest son David Stumpf 1982-2022 (39).


Surviving are his two daughters and youngest son, two sons-in-law and a daughter-in-law, six grandchildren. Daughter Kimberly (Justin) Cottingham, their two children Jaycee (11) and David (8). Daughter Heather (Joshua) Stern, their three children Ethan (21), Joshua (17) and Bay (12). Son Matthew (Carrie) Stumpf, their daughter Haven (3) and expected seventh grandchild.


Dave loved to tell stories, and we loved to listen to them. Second to his love for his family was his love for the Pirates. He has been an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan telling stories of watching them at Forbes Field and continued to watch every game of nearly every season as long as we can remember. He recently said that he was going to miss watching the Pirates and going to a game each season. He also enjoyed going to amusement parks, all holidays and birthdays since they brought the entire family together for a great time. We would love to hear your stories with Mr. Stumpf and see any photos of him. Dave was a father, pap-pap, friend to many and we are grateful and better people for the time we were able to spend with him.


Friends will be received Friday, December 5, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. for the funeral at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Following the funeral there will be a Celebration of Life luncheon that we be held from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.
