Beloved teacher, coach, mentor, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on April 12, 2026.

David graduated from Oakmont High School in 1953, where he was a standout halfback on the football team. He went on to attend North Carolina State University on a football scholarship, where he excelled as a dual-sport athlete, playing both football and eventually soccer.

His passion for soccer extended beyond his college years. He played for the Harmarville Hurricanes Soccer League, helping lead them to several championship titles playing with a team that were all sons of European immigrants.

After college, David began a distinguished 35-year teaching career with the Allegheny Valley School District. As an educator, he developed a home-school visitor program, reflecting his deep commitment to student success both in and out of the classroom, and expanded the physical education curriculum.

David's greatest professional achievement was his tenure as head coach of the Springdale High School boys' soccer team. Over the course of his career, he led the team to 149 victories, five section championships, and nine WPIAL titles. His "Dynamos" achieved an extraordinary undefeated streak of 72 consecutive games from 1968 to 1972, still the best in Pennsylvania history. He became one of the most honored soccer coaches and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Alle-Kiski Sports Hall of Fame, the WPIAL Hall of Fame, and the Allegheny Valley School District Alumni Hall of Fame.

While his accolades were many, David was most proud of the scholarships he helped secure for his players, young men who remained in contact with him throughout his life and were deeply grateful for his guidance. He was the ideal model of a coach and educator: someone who cared about all students, not just athletes, who placed academics above victories, and who was genuinely invested in the well-being of every young person he encountered.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Giacomo and Rosalinda Meloni; his beloved wife, Eleanor Meloni; his sister, Gena Meloni; his brother-in-law, Bernard Miller; and his great-niece, Paige Miller.

He is survived by his sister and housemate, Maria Miller, who lovingly cared for him as he aged and became visually impaired.

Although David had no children of his own, he was deeply cherished by his nieces and nephews: Linda Miller Neff and her husband, Chris; Jeff Miller and his wife, Lynn; and great-nieces and nephews, Emily (Drew), Katherine (Ryan), Eric, and Evan. He recently became the great-great uncle of Lincoln, Lily, and Franklin.

As David's health declined, he was grateful for his many caregivers. In addition to his sister Maria, he was supported by his great-nephew, Eric Neff, whom David often referred to as his most trusted and helpful companion and "stepson." Additional support was provided by his niece Linda Neff and her husband, Chris, and former goalie Dave Fortun and his wife, Charlene, who were beacons of light, bringing joy through their visits and thoughtful gestures.

David also maintained lifelong friendships with many former soccer connections, students, and friends. The calls, visits, and cards over the years brought joy and produced reminiscing of soccer, playing the accordion, and growing up in Harmarville.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in David's memory to the Springdale Dynamo Education Fund or St. Paul of the Cross Monastery, where David successfully planned the golf outing for many years.
