DR. DAVID A.

David Blandino was born to Virginia and Carl J. Blandino, on February 22,1952, and died peacefully at home, in the Highland Park neighborhood in Pittsburgh, on September 30, 2025. He grew up with his brothers, Bruce, Carl and Allen. He attended Bishop Canevin High School and was inducted into their Sports Hall of fame in 2019. He continued to excel in football while attending Pitt, where he was named National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete, and received the NCAA Today's Top V Award. He attended Pitt for both his undergraduate degree in Mathematics and earned his M.D. at Pitt medical school, where he later returned to receive his Masters in Public Health. He met his wife, Barbara, while attending Bellefield Church, where she worked. They were married on July 30, 1977. After a residency in WIlliamsport, they chose to make Pittsburgh their home and raise their three children, Katharine, Jonathan and Elizabeth, in West Oakland. They joined Friendship Community Church, where David was an elder and involved in various church committees and community outreach projects. Dr. Blandino was integral in the work of both Highmark and Allegheny Health Network, and was AHN's board chair for a dozen years. He also maintained a long career as a practicing family medicine physician and health care advocate that spanned four decades. David committed his career as a family medicine physician, first at family-medicine clinics in the Hill District and then as Residency Director of Family Medicine at UPMC Shadyside. He ended his career at East Liberty Family Health Care Center, which is known for its faith-based mission as a federally qualified health Center. Davey loved to travel and spend time with family, friends and colleagues and never wanted to miss out on a social event. He was well-read and loved to discuss the finer points of Star Trek, theology, politics and current events. He had a humble charm that people found endearing. He never missed an opportunity to lighten the mood or push the limits. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; children, Katharine Blandino-Nienhuis (Matt), Jonathan Blandino, Elizabeth Blandino-Lopez (Carlos); grandchildren, Chapin Nienhuis, Zoe Nienhuis and Merai Blandino-Lopez. The family would like to thank the health care providers at AHN, who cared for David throughout his battle with cancer; friends and family who supported us with visits, food, prayers and love; and AHN hospice for their compassionate medical care. Friends will be received on Friday, October 3, 2025, at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS INC., (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Celebration of Life Service will be on Saturday, October 4, at 10:30 a.m., at Eastminster Presbyterian Church on Highland Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pittsburgh Urban School or East Liberty Family Health Care Center.
