DR. L. PATRICK

The family of Patrick Kane is deeply saddened to announce that Dr. Kane passed away, on June 27, 2025. Pat was a life-long and proud resident of Pittsburgh. After graduating from Boston University, Pat attended the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and completed his residency in internal medicine at Allegheny General Hospital. He completed his fellowship in hematology/oncology in 1992 and went on to have a long and successful career as an oncologist.

Pat was a generous, compassionate and devoted physician. He served patients in the greater Pittsburgh area and in West Virginia. More often than not, in addition to providing excellent medical care, his patients and their families thanked Pat for his compassionate and respectful treatment. He helped thousands of patients and friends navigate the challenge of cancer and the necessary treatment. Over time, Pat obtained a medical license in five additional states and traveled to remote rural communities to serve those populations in his retirement.

Pat and his wife and soulmate, Becky Burgwin, contributed to many charitable causes. As a result of their longstanding connection with the Living Compassion project, they were particularly enthusiastic about their establishment and continued support of a hospital in Ndola, Zambia.

Pat was an avid golfer and a sports fan. He loved to travel, but he was also happy at home with the cats and a good book (World War II and rock star memoirs were his favorites). Pat will also be fondly remembered for his extensive celebration of the holidays, including epic Halloween costumes and a beautifully detailed annual Christmas tree and village. A lover of the ocean and the beach, specifically Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, friends and family of "Uncle Pat" will lovingly recall his playful antics such as his impersonation of a humpback whale while swimming and dressing as a sea-fearing shark for the annual Sea Witch Festival parade. He was the undisputed Frog Bog champion in the family, always taking home a mountain of stuffed animals from Funland.

Pat adored children and had a goofy and playful relationship with his daughters, nieces and nephews and family friends. He loved live concerts, often attending concerts of his favorite bands on his own, but also taking his nieces to see the Backstreet Boys in style via limousine and gifting his daughter floor seats to a Metallica show where she tried, unsuccessfully, to get him to join the mosh pit. He was always so much fun to be around.

Pat was predeceased by his parents, Grace and Leonard P. Kane, Jr.; and by his loving wife and best friend, Becky Burgwin. Pat is survived by his daughters, Erin Kennedy and Alisha Ryan (Michael Kneier); his sister, Michelle O'Donnell (Tim); and nieces, Holly O'Donnell, Shannon McCusty (Jono) and Caroline Bracken (Todd); and the Burgwin family members, including his godson, Collinson. He is also mourned by countless friends from across his years of work and play.

A Celebration honoring Pat's Life will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (https://humaneanimalrescue.org/) or The Africa Project at Living Compassion (https://www.livingcompassion.org/ ). Arrangements by John A. Freyvogel, Inc.
