EDWARD P.

Born January 16, 1929 and died on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at age 96, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Bellevue, New Brighton, and Cranberry Township. Beloved husband of 68 years of Mary Joan Menner Smith; loving father of Edward "Ward" Smith, Jr. (Janet), Breen Smith (Joni) and the late Gregory Smith; brother of Theresa Spagnolo; also survived by nieces and nephews. Son of the late John E. R. and Theresa Murray Smith; predeceased by his siblings, Veronica, Mary Louise, Murray, Donald, William, Eugene, and Jerome. He respected forgiveness, kindness, empathy, honesty, integrity, humility, perseverance, and preferred verbs to nouns and liked "We" rather than "Me." His heart was touched by the blind and those who could not walk or talk. He was honored to serve his country in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War. To the veterans who did their best: "Let us lay our flag upon their chest, all is well brothers and sisters, God is nigh." As a graduate of Assumption grade school, North Catholic HS, Slippery Rock University and earning graduate degrees at the University of Pittsburgh, Ed tried to do his best as a mentor to generations of young adults as they passed his way as a teacher, counselor, coach and administrator for the New Brighton and Blackhawk School Districts. While at Blackhawk, he also served as a Secondary and Middle School Principal for 25 years. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue, at Devonshire Street, (freyvogelfuneralhome.com), on Thursday, February 27, from 3-7 p.m. Funeral, Friday, Mass of Christian Burial, St. Paul Cathedral, 10a.m. Private Interment. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the St. Paul Cathedral Food Pantry, or a Food Pantry of choice.
