ELIZABETH "BETTY"
Born on October 11, 1932, and passed into God's arms on August 12, 2025, at the age of 92, Elizabeth "Betty" Bencho was the dedicated daughter of the late Julia and Sigmund Hill. Dear Betty died peacefully, at home with family, on August 12, 2025.
Betty was born and raised in, and a lifelong resident of, McKees Rocks, PA. If there was one defining truth about Betty's life, it was complete devotion to her family. Her greatest achievement and most treasured role being a mother; every breath she took was for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She cherished each of her family members exactly as they were, making them feel valued and seen, embracing their strengths and accepting their imperfections with unconditional love. Even while raising eight children of her own, it seemed her heart had infinite capacity. She had an extraordinary ability to care for anyone in need, extending her love and support far beyond her immediate family; and she possessed a remarkable gift of connection. All who met her were touched by her warmth and genuine interest in their lives; strangers would become friends, and friends would become family. Betty was the youngest of nine children and a first-generation American. Having worked through the Great Depression as a child and working well into her 70s, she embodied the quiet determination of her generation. Her community recognized her dedication through her 14-year service on the Sto-Rox school board, where she served as President for part of her term and was the driving force to get a new elementary school built. Despite not having children in school at the time, she genuinely cared about the community's future. She will be remembered for providing endless love to her family, extended family and friends. Also, for her unbreakable spirit, always standing up to fight for what is right, and for her generosity, donating every last dollar she had to countless charities and those in need.
Betty created a legacy that will never be forgotten as a mother of eight, grandma of ten, and great-grandma of 14 who will dearly miss her. Former wife of George "Babe" Bencho (deceased); and their children, Kathleen (Stephen) Taylor, Linda (Kenneth) Nekos, John, George (Jeannie), Suzanne, Thomas (Shelly), Mark (deceased), and Joseph (deceased); her grandchildren, Monique (Robert) Polas, Christina (Thomas) Bencho-Bost, Michelle (Andrew) Whalen, Julia (Michael) Reynolds, TJ (Jennifer), Kerry (Joshua) Gialloreto, Nicholas (Emily) Nekos, Natalie (Jeff) Hoag, David (Nicole) Taylor, and Alexander Taylor (Chrissy Shammas); great-grandchildren, Thomas, Luke and Tucker Bencho, Monique and Brielle Polas, Aven and JJ Reynolds, Cillian, Maximus and Katrina Gialloreto, Makenzie and Tanner Hoag, and Dylan and Victoria Whalen. Friends will be received Saturday and Sunday, 2-8 p.m., at the SZAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 238 Helen St., McKees Rocks, PA 15136, 412-331-9713. Service will be held on Monday, beginning at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, 11:00 a.m., at Archangel Gabriel Parish, St. Mary's Church, 1011 Church Street, McKees Rocks.
