HERBERT "HERB" ANTHONY

Herbert "Herb" Anthony Weiss, 98, of Cranberry Township, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026. Herb will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, master baker, and friend whose warm smile, tireless work ethic, and generous spirit touched everyone who knew him.

Herb lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of family, friendship, and the outdoors. Raised on a farm in the North Side of Pittsburgh, Herb attended a one-room schoolhouse where he learned the values of perseverance and responsibility at an early age. By the age of 12, Herb was working after school in a neighborhood bakery, unknowingly beginning a lifelong passion that would shape his future.

During the Korean War, Herb proudly served in the United States Army. Even while serving his country, he continued using his baking skills, preparing fresh bread and baked goods for fellow soldiers. Following his military service, Herb met Mary, the love of his life, at West View Park Danceland. Their chance meeting blossomed into a marriage that spanned 52 wonderful years.

In 1957, Herb and Mary fulfilled their dream of owning a business by opening Weiss Bakery in Brentwood. For the next 32 years, the bakery became a neighborhood tradition, known for its fresh doughnuts, breads, cookies, pies, candies, beautifully decorated birthday and wedding cakes, and the warm welcome customers received each day.

After closing the bakery in 1989, retirement never truly slowed Herb down. He continued baking at Schorr Family Bakery on Pittsburgh's North Side, one day a week, where he enjoyed making chocolate candies and staying connected to the trade he loved. Outside of work, Herb embraced an active lifestyle. An avid runner in his younger years, Herb later discovered a passion for golf that lasted well into his nineties. Whether walking the course or sharing laughs with friends, golf remained one of his greatest joys. Most any weekend you could find Herb at Hartmann's Golf Course in Harmony.

He also found great satisfaction tending to his vegetable garden, spending time hunting, and watching classic cowboy movies. Whether around the card table, carefully following the stock market as an enthusiastic investor, or sharing stories with family and friends, Herb enjoyed every opportunity to connect with those around him.

Those who knew Herb will remember his quiet kindness, gentle sense of humor, very sharp, astute, and genuine interest in everyone he met.

Herb is survived by his sons, Damian A. Weiss, Rodger H. (Karen P.) Weiss, Richard L. (Anita S.) Weiss; grandchildren, Geoffrey A. Weiss, Sarah E. Steager, Jazmyn A. Phillips, Isabell M. Weiss; great-grandchildren, Maritsa N. Phillips and Dean Steager; his sister, Dorothy E. O'Mara; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary M. Weiss; his parents, Raymond and Marie Weiss; siblings, Raymond Weiss, Agnes T. Holman and Margaret M. Fundis.

Family and friends will be received on Monday, July 27, 2026, from 12-2 and 4-6 P.M. at JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236.

A Blessing Service will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 12 P.M. in the Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice in Herb's memory.
