Celebrating 99 Years of Life, Love, and Hospitality

A Century of Faith, Family, Giving, Grace, and Humor

With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Irene Seftick (aka Nina), who took her final bow, unafraid and with an open heart, surrounded by her loving daughter; and two of her grandsons; and her special friend, Sam, on April 8, 2026, at the age of 99. A woman of extraordinary beauty, strength, and grace, she lived (almost) a full century as a force of love and hospitality (her kitchen was ALWAYS open for a meal and conversation). She leaves behind a legacy as vibrant and loving as she was.

She was a devoted wife to the late George, her husband of 64 years; a proud and guiding mother of two daughters, Kathleen and Cheryl; a son, Ronald; a doting grandmother to Deron, Julie, Thomas, Kyle, and Jordan; a loving great-grandmother to Anabelle, Kenleigh, Berklee, Clara, Holly, Evelyn, Nathaniel, Jackson, Anastasia, Genevieve, and Millie; a mother-in-law to Ron, Nicholas, Linda, and Jeff; and a generous friend to more than can be named.

From extremely humble beginnings during the Great Depression, Irene built a life defined by resilience, compassion, deep devotion to family, and a love and practice of faith and prayers to God. As a young woman, she ventured off alone to a strange new city, working for GE and meeting what would be her future husband. Her devotion to nurturing a close family while her husband was working and going to night school, as well as setting an enduring example of hospitality, love for life, and family, is noteworthy.

Her talents were many; an amazing cook and gracious hostess, a family and friend therapist that always was available for a session, and a great home remodeler. But her most endearing quality was her quiet temperament and love of kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, or any child that she encountered. Her faith, though, was her support network as she prayed daily for her complete extended family by name as well as peace on earth.

Irene had a sharp wit with an even sharper memory; she remained curious about the world and those around her until the end. She remained a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother till the end of her life.

Remaining in Pittsburgh her entire married life, she became an avid Steeler fan and rarely missed watching a game. She also poured her heart into creating a warm, welcoming, and loving home, taking deep pride in nurturing not only her family but also friends of all her children. She cherished her family, helped them to achieve their dreams, and developed numerous lifelong friendships along the way. She never missed a call to help either; she was always available, whether it was for her family, friends, or a relative needing a compassionate voice to talk to in the middle of the night. Whether traveling to her condo in Florida or visiting far-flung children across the U.S., she remained adventurous, playful, and deeply hospitable and social and always had the welcome mat out at her home.

Irene Seftick, you were truly a once-in-a-century woman. We promise to keep the legacy going with love, laughter, and memories of you.
