On Monday, October 12, 2020, J. David Barnes of Fox Chapel, PA passed away at age 91. Dave was born on August 23, 1929, to Alfred D. and Marian K. Barnes. He graduated from Allegheny College in 1951 with a BA in economics, and then he received an LLB from Harvard Law School in 1954. He served in the US Army for two years in Europe. Upon returning stateside, Dave moved to Pittsburgh, joining Mellon Bank in 1956. After working there for 30 years, he retired as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. While he served on many corporate and philanthropic boards through the years, Dave had a soft spot for education. In the 1970s and 1980s, he gave his time to the Ellis School, participating in the development plans which led to the first substantial renovation of the institution's facilities and the doubling of its endowment. In 1987, he was elected to the Board of Trustees at the University of Pittsburgh. He worked with six different committees in his 30 years there. In his spare time, Dave enjoyed rebuilding antique tractors, tree management and caring for the many stray animals who found their way into his home. Dave was predeceased by his loving wife, Suzanne Robbins Barnes; also by his siblings, Mary Jane Houtz, Lewis Barnes and Lucy Barnes. He is survived by his two daughters, Suzanne, of Boston, MA, and Elizabeth, of East Hampton, NY. The family would like to thank the wonderful group of women, who surrounded and supported Dave in his final years, allowing him to continue to live life on his own terms. A private interment was held at Homewood Cemetery and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Pittsburgh.
