Known to her friends and loved ones as "Janny," Janet S. Stewart passed away peacefully, on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at the age of 84. She was the beloved wife of the late William Alvah "Al" Stewart III; loving mother of George L. Stewart II (Sue) and Benjamin A. Stewart (Hillary); cherished grandmother of Carter B. "Bo" Stewart (Katie), Emily S. Frazier (Kevin), Hollis S. Johnson (Bennett), William R. Stewart and Carolyn P. Stewart; step-grandmother of McKenna A Wojick; great-grandmother of William L. Johnson and Evelyn R. Stewart; sister of Joyce S. Kinghorn, Jean L. Stoehr and the late Judith S. George. She also left behind several cousins, nieces and nephews.


Janny came into this world on October 11, 1940, the second of four daughters born to George H. Stoehr, Jr. and Mary S. Stoehr. She was a graduate of Edgewood High School (1958) and the University of Pittsburgh (1962), where she was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. While a student at Pitt, she made many wonderful friendships, several of which lasted throughout her lifetime. She also met the young gentleman, her beloved Al, whom she ultimately would marry in 1962.


First and foremost, Janny was a "people person." She enjoyed anything and everything that involved being surrounded by friends and loved ones, including bridge club, book clubs, sporting events, dinner parties, holiday and birthday celebrations, graduations, reunions, and annual summer vacations in Stone Harbor, New Jersey, where she frequently indulged her love of ice cream and art galleries, as well as "chewing the fat" with family and friends on the beach.


Janny also loved sports, particularly tennis, which she especially enjoyed while a longtime member of the Fox Chapel Racquet Club. She occasionally tried her hand at both snow and water skiing, albeit with mixed success; by her own admission, she spent more time in an upright position doing the former than the latter. She was an ardent fan of all Pittsburgh sports teams and relished the many championships that they celebrated during her lifetime.


For more than a decade, Janny pursued her passion for interior design, working mostly out of the Choir Loft in Verona, PA. She left the working world not long after Al's untimely death in 1991, at which point she got the "travel bug." During this period of her life, she enjoyed numerous trips to Europe and made several lasting friendships with travel companions along the way.


More than anything, Janny adored being a grandparent. She glowed in the presence of her grandchildren, often hosting them for sleepovers or treating them to dinners out. She attended innumerable athletic contests, plays, musical performances and dance recitals, invariably coming away from each with the decided and unshakeable view that her grandkids were "the best", even if the data may have offered an alternative view, and her grandchildren equally adored their beloved "Grandma Jan."


For several years, Janny was an active member of Christ Church, in Fox Chapel. From there, she moved to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, in Highland Park.


Sadly, Alzheimer's slowly and insidiously began to deprive Janny of the many gifts and pleasures that she had enjoyed throughout most of her life; but, true to her character, she did not give into the disease without a fight. The family respectfully suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org, so that Janny's battle against the disease may continue beyond her lifetime.


No Visitation. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, 384 Fox Chapel Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15238. Arrangements by WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME, Aspinwall.
