Age 80, of Peters Twp., passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on Thursday, June 5, 2025. Jeff was the beloved husband of Sandra Lee Mertens for 57 years; loving father to Erik (Jillet) Mertens, DMD and Tracy (Don) Dabkowski; cherished papa of Elena, Ryder and Talia Mertens and Jake (Maggie) and Gavin Dabkowski; brother of Wayne (Yolanda) Mertens and the late Kim (Cathy survives) Mertens; also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Jeff grew up in Patton, PA and graduated from Cambria Heights High School. He received both his undergraduate and dental degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. Following dental school he served with the U.S. Army while stationed in Korea and Fort Lee, Virginia. He and his family moved to Pittsburgh and started his dental practice in the South Hills. Dr. Jeff practiced for almost 50 years, being named one of Pittsburgh's top dentists while treating his patients like family. He was very active in organized dentistry during his career, having served as president of the Western PA Dental Society. Jeff was a long-time season ticket holder and avid Pitt football fan. He was an active member of St. Benedict the Abbot Church and was past president of the Ben's Men's Club. A man with many friends, he was always very social and was generous with his time to a fault. He was happiest spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Family and friends will be received on Thursday, from 6-8 p.m. and Friday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at BEINHAUER FUNERAL HOME, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, PA 15317. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, at 9:30 a.m., in St. John XXIII Parish, St. Benedict the Abbot Church (everyone please meet at the church).
