JEROME (JERRY)

Jerome "Jerry" Schwertz passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at age 70. He was born in Pittsburgh, growing up in Bethel Park, where he excelled at football. Jerry went to The Ohio State University, where he was on the football team for two years, before opting to focus on his civil engineering education. He became a Professional Engineer, where he began as a bridge engineer at Mackin Engineering Company, ultimately rising to become company President.

Jerry married Marcy, his high school sweetheart, and they were married for almost 45 years. They lovingly restored an old stone home in Mt. Lebanon, where they loved entertaining family and many dear friends. Seven years ago, they restored a beach house on Longboat Key, FL, where they continued to entertain as a team for the dear, fast friends they made there. In retirement, he became an excellent cook, specializing in Marcy's family's Italian recipes that would have otherwise been lost. And he could sure make a mean cocktail, gin martinis being his favorite. They lived in paradise enjoying the pristine beach and stunning sunsets there. Marcy and Jerry traveled extensively in Europe and the Caribbean in the 80s, 90s, and 2010s, but once moving to Longboat Key, felt there was no reason to leave their paradise. Other passions included genealogy and fantasy football.

He was a devoted son, husband, brother and uncle, earning the title "Fun-cle." He personified fun and the twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes, ever present smile and hearty laugh endeared him to everyone. Once you met him, you wanted to be his friend. He was always willing to help anyone in need. As Marcy's parents, Ody and Fran, declined in their final years, he did countless things to make their last years easier. Jerry's final act of generosity was by being an organ donor. He loved Marcy fiercely, as she did him, and happily spoiled her. They shared 53 years together, but it was still not enough.

Jerry was the beloved husband of Marcy Mackin; loving brother of Larry (Michelle) Schwertz, Jack (Cathie) Schwertz and the late Bob Schwertz; doting uncle of Melody, Stacy, Zach, Carly, Chelsea, Kayla, John and Michael; adoring great-uncle of Charlie, Sophie, Winnie, Lawson, Lucy, Quinn and Scottie; and dear brother-in-law of Dean (Cynthia) Mackin. In addition to his brother, Jerry was also preceded in death by his mother, Mary Alice (McLaughlin) Schwertz; father, Jerome Hall Schwertz; stepmother, Mary Jane (Kimmerle) Schwertz; and mother and father-in-law, Fran and Ody Mackin.
