JOHN BERTRAND

A deeply loved father, husband, brother, son, uncle, educator, psychologist, and friend, John Bertrand Criswell II, 75, of Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully June 23, 2026.

Known to family and friends as "Johnny," and affectionately as "Johnny Cat" or "Cat Man," he was first and foremost a devoted husband and father whose love anchored everyone around him.

Known for his generous heart, quick wit, and genuine interest in others, Johnny never met a stranger. He had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen, often learning their name within moments and making them feel like an old friend before the conversation was over. Even during his time in the hospital, he carefully kept track of the names of his nurses, doctors, and caregivers so he could address each one by name and thank them personally.

Born on June 1, 1951, in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, to John and Wilma Criswell, Johnny was the second oldest of four children. He spent his childhood exploring the South Hills by bicycle, riding throughout Mt. Lebanon, fishing at Canonsburg Lake with a fishing rod strapped to his bike, and pedaling to South Hills Catholic High School each day. Summers brought cherished adventures with friends, including trips to Ocean City, Maryland, and Lake Chautauqua, that became lifelong memories. It was in Ocean City in 1970, while surrounded by his Pittsburgh friends, that he met the love of his life. During those years, Johnny also developed a love for playing the guitar. Music became a lifelong passion, bringing him great joy and connecting him with many dear friends throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

A proud graduate of South Hills Catholic High School, Class of 1969, Johnny went on to earn both a Master of Science and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in School Psychology from Duquesne University. He dedicated his professional life to helping children and families, serving as a School Psychologist for the North Allegheny School District for 26 years, from September 1981 through June 2007. Through his compassion, patience, and unwavering support, he positively impacted the lives of countless students, parents, teachers, and colleagues.

Johnny married the love of his life, Cynthia "Cindy" Gallon Criswell, in June 1975. Although Cindy passed away in December 1988, she remained the love of his life until his final day. Their bond never faded, and her memory was forever woven into the fabric of his life.

Outside of his career, Johnny found joy in music, family, and the simple pleasures of life. He was rarely far from his guitar and loved filling a room with songs, stories, and laughter. He enjoyed riding his Harley, tending to his garden, and spending time at the beach. Maui held a special place in his heart, particularly the trip he shared with his nephews Keith and Kurt. Those who knew him can easily picture him with a guitar in hand, strumming a favorite tune and bringing people together.

For three and a half years, Johnny faced metastatic prostate cancer with extraordinary courage, determination, and grace. His greatest motivation was always his family. He treasured the opportunity to walk his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day and to welcome his beloved grandson, Grae, into the world, moments that brought him immeasurable joy and gave him every reason to keep fighting.

He is survived by his loving children, John Brooks (Diana Ngo) Criswell and Lindsey (Benjamin) Koslow; his cherished grandson, Grae; his faithful grand-dog, Larry; his brother, Mark (Nancy) Criswell; his sisters, Linda (Jerome) Kimmel and Nancy Criswell; his nephews Keith (Leyla) Kimmel, Kurt (Dawn) Kimmel, Mark (Megan) Criswell, Scott Criswell, and Jeff (Bliss) Criswell; and many beloved cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cindy; his parents, John and Wilma Criswell; and his parents-in-law, John and Martha Sue Gallon.

As heavy as our hearts are, we find comfort in knowing Johnny is whole again, free from pain, and reunited with those he loved so deeply. His kindness, humor, wisdom, resilience, and unwavering love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
