JOHN GERALD

John Gerald Shortridge, longtime resident of Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania, devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away unexpectedly following surgery on September 23, 2025.

He was born March 19, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Lucile and Gerald Shortridge, and attended Howe High School and Hanover College, where he met and married his college sweetheart, Margaret (Margo) Stockton of Kenilworth, Illinois. John then graduated from Northwestern University School of Law, in Evanston, Illinois and embarked on a career that would span over three decades at U. S. Steel Corporation. One of his first assignments was helping to create and implement hiring procedures to comply with the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Later, he and his family relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania home of the corporate offices where he had a distinguished career in Public Affairs and Government Relations.

As an Eagle Scout, John developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors. In his retirement, he enjoyed hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, biking in the Swiss Alps, trekking in the Scottish Highlands, and notably he biked the Great Allegheny Passage from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. seven times. He also completed the Rim-to-Rim Trail, but one of his most memorable experiences was rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon with his grandchildren. His wife, daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren were his greatest love. He felt a deep connection to each of them, and created a comforting foundation that instilled within them the ability to recognize and appreciate what's truly important in life. He also relished in their successes. John and his family spent time each summer at Chautauqua Institution on Lake Chautauqua, New York.

John was a firm believer in helping others and served on several non-profit boards including Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, where he created the John and Margo Shortridge Scholarship Fund to help finance mission trips. Equally strong was John's Christian faith. He was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, in Upper St. Clair where he served as an Elder, Deacon, and chaired two Pastoral Nominating Committees.

John is survived by his wife, Margo; his three daughters, Margaret Shortridge-Werd (Greg) of Kenilworth, Illinois, Kathleen Crawford (Colin) of Glenview, Illinois and Sarah McClintock (Dave) of Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania, and his grandchildren, Gregory, John, Robert, and Margaret Werd, Bradley and Caroline Crawford, Marly and Ridge McClintock, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Cooper of Indianapolis, Indiana and sister-in-law, Patricia Hagenah (Will) of Kenilworth, Illinois and sister-in-law, Barbara May (Bill) of Jupiter, Florida. He was preceded in death by his sister, Suzanne Lamby (Robert) and his brother-in-law, Jack Stockton (Jan).

A Memorial Service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1040 Washington Road, Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania 15241 at 10:30 a.m. on October 4, 2025.
