JOHN M. "JACK" BURDETTE Obituary

BURDETTE

JOHN M. "JACK"

Age 95, of Peters Township, passed away peacefully in his home, on Saturday, December 27, 2025. He was the beloved husband of 62 years to the late Winifred "Winnie" Burdette; loving father of Greg (Nancy) Burdette, Steve (Kim) Burdette and Anne (Jerry) DeVries; proud grandfather of Megan (Kasey) McGee, Lindsay Burdette, Kelly Burdette, Philip (Allison) Burdette, Justin (Lindsay) Burdette, Teresa (Brian) Furao, Wesley (Courtney) Burdette, Zachary DeVries, Seth DeVries and Elijah DeVries; adoring great-grandfather of Evelyn Burdette, Ethan Burdette, Meier Burdette, Aubrey Burdette, Alena Burdette, Wright Burdette, Aiden Furao, Theo Furao, Audrey McGee and Callum McGee.

John was born in Bellwood, West Virginia, to the late Sam and Edith Burdette and was raised alongside his younger brother, the late David Burdette, amid the mining and farming communities in southern West Virginia. He graduated from high school in Rainelle, WV, attended junior college at Greenbrier Military Academy in Lewisburg, WV, and went on to earn his degree in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University through the ROTC program. A lifelong WVU fan, it was at the university where he met his beloved wife, Winnie.

John served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for two years, primarily in Mineral Wells, TX. After a short employment with North American Coal, he began a thirty-two-year career with Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) that included positions in Moundsville and Ohio Valley mining operations and corporate engineering management based near Pittsburgh. John ultimately retired as Director of Coal Processing and Construction. John was a recognized authority in many aspects of coal process engineering, with a deep passion for mentoring younger engineers. After retirement, he maintained a close relationship with many former colleagues.

Everyone who knew John recognized the warmth and light he brought to all he met. He delighted in conversation and connecting with people. In his retirement years, he and Winnie travelled and spent winters in Hobe Sound, FL. They were often surrounded by grandchildren, either in Pittsburgh, Florida, or Texas. They were avid golfers and active in many social groups. John's long life also allowed him to experience the love of ten great-grandchildren. A fixture at local gyms before daybreak into his 90's, his attention to physical fitness was a testament to his remarkable longevity. He also was the senior member of a weekly breakfast group known as the "Bored" meeting. John was a devout 55-year parishioner of St. Benedict the Abbot Catholic Church, McMurray.

Arrangements by BEINHAUERS, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, 724-941-3211, where friends and family are welcome Friday, January 9, 2026, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., at St. John XXIII Parish, St. Benedict the Abbot Catholic Church, McMurray.
