MINARIK

JOHN PAUL

Age 78, passed away peacefully, on June 19, 2026, at UPMC Altoona Hospital, following a brief but serious illness.

Born in 1947, and raised in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, John was the eldest son of Rudolph and Pauline Minarik. He is survived by his brothers, James (Jim) Minarik (Megan) and Kenneth (Ken) Minarik (Jennifer); former wife, Susan; along with extended family and many longtime friends.

A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, John maintained a deep interest in science, technology, history, literature, and current events throughout his life. He was also a writer and poet, whose work reflected a thoughtful nature. Among his many interests were automobiles and motorsports, particularly NASCAR and Formula One racing.

John spent 55 years incarcerated; during those years, through teaching and tutoring, he helped hundreds of men obtain GED certificates and college-level degrees. He was a co-founder of the Academy of Prison Arts, helped establish a statewide prison poetry program, published several volumes of poetry, and assisted other incarcerated writers in publishing their work. He also worked with Fred Rogers to help establish children's play areas in prison visiting rooms, making family visits more welcoming for incarcerated parents and their children.

John will be cremated, and his ashes will be interred at Jefferson Memorial Park. His memorial plaque bears the inscription: "A Beloved Son and Brother".
