JOSEPH PHILIP

Joseph Philip Joyce, Sr., known to most simply as Joe, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at the age of 65. He leaves behind a family that is better — stronger, more capable, more loved — for having had him in it.

Joe grew up in Brookline, Pittsburgh, PA, and carried with him for the rest of his life the kind of work ethic that doesn't come from instruction — it comes from character. He spent over 40 dedicated years with Pennsylvania American Water, building a career that reflected everything he was: reliable, skilled, and quietly proud of a job well done.

He was not a man of many words when action would do. His love lived in his hands — callused from decades of work — and in the hours he gave freely to the people he cared about. Whether he was helping his son build a garden, showing his daughter how to install a faucet, or simply showing up when someone needed him, Joe had a way of doing things that became known, affectionately, as the "Joe Joyce Special." No instructions. Just knowledge, instinct, and a stubbornness that always seemed to get the job done.

At the center of Joe's world was his beloved wife, Bonnie — or as he'd say, "Bon." She was his anchor, his light, the person who grounded him even when that wasn't easy, and he loved her with everything he had. Together they built a life rooted in the home he made at Conneaut, a place he poured himself into in his later years so that his family would have something to return to long after him. And his boat — earned through every early morning and long day of work — was where he finally let himself rest, drifting on the water he loved, in the life he had built.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie Rhodes Joyce; his daughter Kaitlyn Joyce (Brian Duncan); his son Ryan Joyce (Hannah); and mother-in-law Sandy Rhodes. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Joyce Hall; Eileen Joyce Baumiller (Ronald); and Teresa Joyce Tysarczyk. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Joseph J. Joyce and Helen C. Jeskevic Joyce; by his sister Patricia Joyce Saint; brothers-in-law Michael Hall and David Tysarczyk; and father-in-law Richard Rhodes. He leaves behind a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and granddogs.

Those calluses on his hands told the whole story. Joe Joyce was 65 years old, and he spent every one of them building a life well lived.
