MARGARET S.

Margaret S. Hornak, of Munhall, Pennsylvania, passed away on July 30, 2026, at age 97. Marge was the youngest child of the late Michael and Bertha (Pastor) Szamjak of Homestead, Pennsylvania. Each of her siblings, Michael "James" Summers, Andrew (Nancy) Somiak, Anna (Louis) Nagy and Stephan (Tillie) Somiak, predeceased her; as did her husband of 47 years, Raymond Hornak. She is survived by her two sons, Mark (Beth) Hornak and Matthew (Kay) Hornak; along with eight grandchildren, Sarah (Jeremy) Zuger, Faith Hornak, Andrew (Anna) Hornak, Samuel Hornak, Rachel Hornak-Gunn (Neil Gunn), Rebecca Hornak, Mary Hornak and Matthew Hornak; along with seven great-grandchildren, Liam and Elsie Zuger, Adam, Kaila and Mason Keesecker, and Oliver and Cooper Gunn.

Marge was born at home and grew up in "The Ward" of Lower Homestead, before relocating to Munhall when the Homestead Works of U.S. Steel was constructed to support the war effort. She was raised in a home that housed multiple related families, along with boarders, who worked in the mills and whose rent supported the household. Marge was a 1947 graduate of Munhall High School, where she performed in the choir and with Fred Waring's touring ensemble. She married Ray in 1950, upon the completion of his studies at the University of Pittsburgh, and they resided in Munhall for many years while he worked in the mills and they raised their family, all in a household that ran on the familiar daily "three shift" schedule of a mid-century mill town. She was employed as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone, and then later in her life as a teller at the Munhall Branch of Mellon Bank, where for a time she was Jaromir Jagr's "personal banker" due to her fluency in the Slavic languages. She was energetically engaged in Matt and Mark's lives growing up as a Den Mother and PTO volunteer and chauffeur for music lessons and an array of activities, and was a faithful member of the First Hungarian Reformed Church of Homestead, from her baptism and confirmation until her death. Her skills at preparing classic Hungarian and Slovak dishes fueled fond memories of tempting aromas, and she and Ray cherished their 40th anniversary travels through Eastern Europe, especially to Hungary. More than anything, she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and reveled in their accomplishments and growing families.

Friends and family will be received at the GEORGE IRVIN GREEN FUNERAL HOME, 3511 Main Street, Munhall, PA, from 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Funeral services will be conducted at the First Hungarian Reformed Church of Homestead, 416 East 10th Avenue, Munhall, PA, at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 6, 2026. Those attending the funeral are invited to meet at the church.
