MARY CARROLL
Mary Carroll Miller, 90, a life-long resident of Brookline, passed peacefully to be with her God on May 6, 2026. Carroll, the youngest of "The Miller Girls," was the devoted daughter of the late Marie C. Greenawald and the late John J. Miller and sister of the late Shirley (late Bill) Land and Joan (late Jack) Shaughnessy.
Carroll was the loving and beloved Aunt of Donna (Floyd) Vissat, Gail (late Dan) Simmons, the late John L. Shaughnessy, Jill (Ed) Benz, Lisa (Ed) Bak, Mary Carol (Bill) Orland and Jim (Gary) Shaughnessy. She is also survived by five great-nieces, eight great-nephews, 12 great-great-nieces, eight great-great-nephews and two great-great-great-nephews, many friends and cousins.
After graduating from Elizabeth Seton High School in 1954, Carroll briefly became a novice with the Sisters of Charity at Seaton Hill. However, after spending some time in the novitiate, she realized her true calling was nursing and left the convent to enroll in the Mercy School of Nursing.
After fulfilling her dream of becoming a nurse, Carroll heard yet another call, the call of the sea. Carroll was commissioned in the United States Navy serving for two years in Jacksonville, FL, earning the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade before leaving the active duty and joining the US Navy Reserves. She returned to Pittsburgh after her time in the Navy, but her love of Nursing and thirst for knowledge led her to the University of Pennsylvania where she earned a Masters' Degree in Nursing.
Upon completion of her Masters' Degree, Carroll became an Associate Professor of Nursing at Duquesne University School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. During her time at Duquesne, Carroll earned a Masters' degree in Theology under the direction of Father Adrian Van Kaam. Taking a one-year sabbatical from Duquesne, Carroll moved to St Cloud, MN, to teach at the College of St. Benedict and spend time with her dear friends, Sr. Kathleen Storms and Sr. Mary Reuter.
After her time in MN, Carroll, returned to beloved Duquesne University where she remained until her retirement in 1998. In her retirement, Carroll liked to spend her time volunteering her nursing skills at various communities, playing bingo or going to the casino and going on RV road and camping trips with her cherished friend, Sr. Paula Drass.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank her health aides, Colleen Ferraro and Cate Guckert, for the kind, gentle, loving attention they provided our aunt when she and the family need it the most.
Per Carroll's wishes, there will not be a viewing, but a funeral mass will be held in her beloved Resurrection Church in Brookline. The date and time for the Mass will be announced later.
Arrangements are being handled by FRANK F. DeBOR FUNERAL HOME, INC., 1065 Brookline Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15226, 412-561-0380.
