MICHAEL PATRICK

Michael Patrick McDonnell, 59, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully at his home on July 22, surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. Born on May 21, 1965, in Davenport, IA, he was the beloved son of the late Sharon Small McDonnell.

A graduate of West High in Davenport, Mike went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree with honors from Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture. He was a gifted designer, mentor, and leader in his many roles including Principal and Chief Operating Officer at IKM Architecture. Mike was a dedicated member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), serving as a past President of the Pittsburgh Chapter. An active member of the Upper St. Clair community, he advised on several township boards.

Mike had a passion for good design that reflected beauty, utility, and strength; he savored a good meal, a nice bourbon, a challenging golf course, and a fast car. He had a lifelong love of travel, with a particular affection for Rome, The Eternal City. He has left a lasting legacy to all who knew him as a father, a husband, an architect, a friend, and a man.

Mike is preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Small McDonnell; wife, Barbara Hanley; brother, Steve McDonnell; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Anne Hanley. He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Oppelt; son, Luke McDonnell; step-daughter, Madeline Oppelt; step-son, Walter Oppelt; mother-in-law, Joanne Hanley; siblings-in-law, Marcie Blanco, Raymond Hanley, Connie and Neil VanCamp, Grace and Gary Truman, Michael and Sara Szalinski, Robert and Barbara Szalinski, Kenneth Szalinski, Timothy and Dianna Szalinski; and many, many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, July 25, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at BEINHAUER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME at 2828 Washington Road. A Catholic mass will be held on Friday, July 26, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine Labouré Parish, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
