Pittsburgh, PA - Nicholas Z. Malachias, 98 passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025.
Loving dad to Zoe (Nick) Lardas and Zachary (Paula) Malachias and proud Papou to Demetri and Zachary Lardas and Diana and Angela Malachias. Brother-in-law to Anna Katsas, John Tsambis and Dina Tsambis (of Greece); a Koumbaro, and Nonno as well as a Theo, great-uncle, great-great-uncle to many nephews and nieces.
He has gone to be with his truly beloved wife Hermione (Tsambis) Malachias; as well as his dear sister, Effie Mamatas; and much missed cousin, Demetra (Mousetis) Podias.
Born on Manhattan's Lower East Side on June 11, 1927, to Zacharias Malachias and Zoe (Kefalos) Malachias, Niko spent his first several years growing up on Catherine Street in the local Greek/Icarian community. During the Depression, the family was more fortunate than many due to both parents working. Niko would often remember enjoying movies and going with his mother and sister to a summer camp run by the Five Points Mission. At the age of seven Niko's mother passed and it became too difficult for his father to work and care for his children so Niko and his sister, Effie went to live in Cairo, Egypt with their father's family for what was to be a short time. Early on their father was able to visit but later WWII made a quick return to the US impossible. After the war, it was back to New York City, drafted with the Army Air Force and on to a college education at City College, then Columbia University and NYU for post-graduate studies. Niko taught English and Journalism for a short time at Westinghouse HS and then Brooklyn Technical HS in NYC for 36 years. Always the teacher, he loved 'Tech' and his students and has even been in contact with former students as recently as the spring of 2025.
Niko and Hermione met and married in Chrisostomos, Ikaria in 1959 and were best friends for over 50 years. They raised a family, loved being with their relatives and explored the world together. May we all be so fortunate. Until we meet again.
