P. Joseph Hickey passed away April 5th, 2026, at Cumberland Crossing Manor in Pittsburgh, PA. He was born March 12, 1926, in Beeville, Texas as Pennell Grove Kennard but was adopted after his mother died, becoming Pennell Joseph Hickey. He grew up an Army brat, living on many different posts. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY in 1949. After numerous assignments, including combat duties in both Korea and Vietnam, he retired in 1975 with the rank of colonel. He received several medals during his 26 years of service. After retirement from the Army, Joe worked at the University of Pittsburgh for almost 20 years.
Joe was blessed with a 67 year long marriage with his wife, Peggyanne Carlon. He is survived by his children: Peggy (David) Chiarella of Savannah, GA; Estelle Varner, Mike Hickey, and Margaret Menges of Pittsburgh, his grandchildren: Jexx (Amy), A.J. (Jeanice), Kevin (Jessica), and Sam (Karla), his great-grandchildren: Ron, Zephaniah, Hadley and Brayden, and 16 living nephews and nieces from the Keenan, Hickey and Haas families. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggyanne, his parents, Lt. Gen. and Mrs. Thomas F. Hickey, his brother, Edward Hickey, and his sisters, Mary Hickey Keenan and Beatrice Kennard.
A devoted Catholic, his priorities in life were God, family and country. Visitation will be held at KYPER FUNERAL HOME on Monday, April 13th, 2026 from 4-8 pm with an opportunity for family to share memories at 6:30 pm. A mass will be held at St Mary's on Tuesday, April 14th, 2026 at 10:30 am. He will be buried with his wife, Peg, at Arlington National Cemetery. For the full obituary, please go to: www.
