Philip A. Coyne, Jr., age 102, a lifelong resident of the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 9, 2021, of natural causes. Born in Pittsburgh on April 27, 1918, he was the son of Philip A., Sr. and Mary (McDonough) Coyne. Phil is the last surviving member of his large and devoted family, of whom he was always extremely proud. His loving companion, Eppy McIntyre, predeceased him in 1978. Also predeceased by his brothers: Patrick Coyne, P. James (Jim) Coyne and former Congressman William J. Coyne; and his sisters: Sara (Charles) George, Rita (William) Boxheimer, Mary (Gates) Castle, and Margaret (Thomas) Foley. He is survived by his devoted and caring sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Rooney Coyne; nephews: Brendan (Jennifer Liebman) Coyne, Daniel (Simone Woodhouse) Coyne, and James (Abigail Ellis) Coyne, Thomas (Karen) Foley and Neal (Connie) Boxheimer; and nieces: Mary Beth (Bob) Pifer, Mary (Bill) Dobson, Mary Ann (Steve) Boxheimer-Friedrich and Margaret Foley. Also surviving is Congressman Coyne's partner, Kathy Kozdemba; many grandnieces and grandnephews; several great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; and many cousins throughout the United States and in Ireland, all of whom treasure memories of Phil at the center of family gatherings. Phil graduated from St. Agnes Elementary School and Duquesne Preparatory School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the European and South Pacific theaters, and recollections of his service are included in the oral history project of Pittsburgh's Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall. Phil was employed as a machinist at Westinghouse Air Brake Company in Wilmerding, retiring in 1980 at age 62. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 9 "The Oakland Irish," American Legion Oakland Post, and San Lorenzo di Gamberale Club of Oakland. For decades, Phil ushered at Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers and University of Pittsburgh sporting events. By far, his best-loved job was ushering for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He ushered his first game in 1936 at Forbes Field, continued at Three Rivers Stadium and retired from PNC Park 81 seasons later, in 2017 at age 99. During that time, he witnessed many legendary moments in Pittsburgh sports, including Bill Mazeroski's winning home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series. On Phil's 100th birthday in 2018, The Pirates hosted an on-field celebration and dedicated a plaque in his honor at Sections 26 and 27 along the third-base line at PNC Park, where he had served guests during his final years as an usher. The uniform and badge worn by Phil that night have been entered into the collection at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY. Another special 100th birthday honor came when Topps issued a Phil Coyne baseball card, which read in part: "Perhaps the most beloved and well-known Pittsburgh Pirates fan in history ... A genuine Pittsburgh treasure." Phil autographed hundreds of those cards in the final years of his life, sent by fans across the country, and he always returned them with a note: "Thank you for caring." He will be deeply missed by all those he touched throughout his long and meaningful life. Friends will be received at JOHN A.
