Born at Sturgeon Bay, WI and a resident of Chatham Village, Pittsburgh, PA for over 66 years. Loving husband of the late Constance Buch Knuth for 56 years. Son of the late Francis M. and Jessie M. Knuth. Brother of the late Leslie K. Angus of Woolrich, PA and Vero Beach, FL. Father of David Frederich Knuth (Mary De-Light Alcorn) of Cincinnati, Robert Francis Knuth (Renee Aline Woodford, MD) of Virginia Beach, VA and Bonita Springs, FL, and William Dietrich Knuth (Karen Ann Walkowski) of Pittsburgh, PA. Kind and loving grandfather of Meghan De-Light Knuth, Francis Reid Knuth (Joanna Marie Brenneman), Haley Amanda Knuth-Nill (Jared Lee Nill), Robert Woodford Knuth (Katherine Lloyd Miller) and Rachel Aline Harper (James Bailey Harper). Great-grandfather of Robert Peter Knuth, Abigal Christine Knuth, Thomas Woodford Knuth, Joseph Francis Knuth, Heidi Marie Knuth and Aline Chloe Harper. Graduate of Lock Haven High School in 1948. During the Korean War, Robert enlisted in the US Army, Signal Corps Army Security Agency and served 28 months in Germany as a Staff Sergeant in the Fifth Corps, where he received the Sharpshooter and Army of Occupation Medals. Receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1954, Robert reenrolled at Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT), College of Fine Arts, Department of Architecture and held the Carnegie, Andrew Mellon and Muirhead Memorial Scholarships. In 1958, Robert received a Bachelor of Architecture Degree. While at CIT, Robert was an active member of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. Upon graduating, he worked seven years for Schmertz & Erwin, Architects in Pittsburgh, and then 10 years for Hoffman, Loeffler and Wolfe (later Loeffler-Johnson-Lundberg) as VP, Major Projects. In 1978, he was recruited by Dravo Corporation for the position of Corporate Architect / Office Facilities Manager and was a member of the Real Estate Committee during the design and construction of the Dravo Tower (now BNY Mellon Center). He retired in 1989 and became Director of Architecture for the City of Pittsburgh. Following his retirement from the city, Robert became a Consultant to Margaret Ringel & Associates, Architects in Pittsburgh until his final retirement in 2025. Robert was a registered architect in PA, held an NCARB certification, former member of AIA, appointed member of AIA Corporate Architects Committee, chaired the Corp. Architecture Conference in 1985 (first National AIA event in Pgh), PA Society of Architects and was a member of International Facility Management Association. Robert was an avid and extremely gifted architect, historian, amateur gardener/landscape architect, HO model railroader and reader. He produced a glorious array of needlepoint creations as remembrances and gifts for his family and friends. He was a member of Shadyside Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, PA. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 15, at 6:00 p.m., at the City Reformed Presbyterian Church, 3929 Coleman St., Pittsburgh, PA.
