SALLY B. (BACKUS)

Age 79, of Monroeville, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Born February 7, 1947, in Wilkinsburg, she was the loving daughter of Samuel R. and Rosina (Kenyon) Backus. Sally was the loving and devoted wife of Gustave A. "Gus" Wickstrom for 53 years, and the two were best friends for 57 years. Cherished mother of Jodi (Jason) Wood, Amanda (Chris) Schmidt, Jonathan Wickstrom, Meredith (Chris) Sood and Samantha (Sean) McDonough. Proud grandmother to Kylie (Ryan) Mickey, Blake Wood, Connor, Liam and Ainsley Schmidt, Maysen and Maxton Sood and Noah and Emma McDonough. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Frank and Bobby Backus.

A lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church of Pitcairn, Sally lived her faith with sincerity and grace. Her tremendous faith in our Lord and Savior guided the way she loved others and carried herself through life.

She was a nurturing first grade teacher for the Penn Hills School District, where she devoted more than 40 years of service before retiring. Sally had a gift for teaching young children with patience, kindness, and encouragement, and she touched countless lives through her loving presence in the classroom.

She was also a wonderful friend who maintained many lifelong friendships that she deeply cherished. Sally had a way of making others feel valued and remembered, and her kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

Above all, Sally treasured her family and wore the title of grandmother proudly and was the ultimate grandmother. Her family knew her as a source of warmth, wisdom, and unconditional love, and she found great joy in being present for the moments that mattered most.

Family and friends will be received Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 3-8 p.m., at the JOBE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY INC. (MONROEVILLE/PLUM CHAPEL), 445 Beatty Road, Monroeville (412-856-4747). Funeral Service will be held Friday, June 26, 2026, at 10 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church of Pitcairn, 312 Highland Avenue, Pitcairn, PA 15140. (EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH).
