WRIGHT
THOMAS DAVID
Thomas David Wright, age 88, of Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania and Naples, Florida, passed away on March 19, 2026.
Tom was born in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, on December 4, 1937, to the late Russell Oran Wright and Bertha Davis Wright. He lived on the family farm in Camp Run near Harmony in Beaver County, PA, for the first few years of his life, before his family settled permanently in a house in Fombell, Pennsylvania. His early education took place in the American and Greenwood one-room country schoolhouses, where his mother, Bertha, was the teacher. Tom's family attended Camp Run Presbyterian Church in Harmony, PA, and he retained his membership in that church for the rest of his life. As a child, he was a member of 4H and the Pleasant Hill Grange. His father, Russell, involved him in his business activities from an early age, letting his young son, Tom, calculate the premiums for the Equitable Life insurance policies he sold. He developed a strong work ethic through manual labor at the Zelienople municipal airport and in the parks of Beaver County, working under his father, Russell, who served as a Beaver County Commissioner and Director of Public Works. Tom was a graduate of Ellwood City High School, Dickinson College where he was President of the local chapter of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and Harvard Law School, where he earned an L.L.B. degree and was a member of the Harvard Law Review.
Tom met his beloved wife, Ginnie, when she was working as the secretary to the President of the Harvard Law Review, and they were married on August 18, 1962, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Nantucket Island, followed by a reception at Sankaty Head Golf Club.
Tom started his legal career in 1962, with the law firm of Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott in Pittsburgh, PA, practicing primarily in the areas of Federal income taxation, mergers and acquisitions and real estate development. He soon earned a national reputation as one of the finest tax and transactional attorneys in the country. His clients included Alcoa, Gulf Oil and Oxford Development Company, among many other public and privately owned companies in Pittsburgh and beyond. Notably, Tom worked as outside counsel to Ed Ryan at Ryan Homes, now publicly traded as NVR Homes, and as attorney and advisor to Joe Hardy at 84 Lumber Company. He served as Chairman of the firm's tax department, a member of its Board of Directors, and as President and CEO of the firm for two years in the mid-1990s, guiding the firm through a challenging period in its history.
In addition to his legal expertise, Tom was also a prominent businessman and entrepreneur, actively investing in privately-owned businesses and real estate since the early 1970s. He and a partner acquired Werner Donaldson Moving Services Inc., part of the Allied Van Lines network, which led to his co-founding Business Records Management, Inc. (BRM), an off-site records and information management company, in 1985. He served as Chairman of BRM until its sale in 2008 to an affiliate of Goldman Sachs.
In 1987, Tom and his close friend and business partner, Henry Posner, Jr., formed the Hawthorne Group to acquire, invest in and manage privately-owned businesses in a wide variety of areas, including real estate, paging, cellular telephone, cable television, media advertising, and several radio and broadcast television stations (including WPGH-TV, now Pittsburgh's Fox network affiliate). Tom served as President and co- CEO of the Hawthorne Group from its inception.
In 2004, Tom founded Rosetta Capital Corporation with his sons, Tom Jr. and Steven, to pursue acquisitions of and investments in privately-held businesses. This fulfilled his deeply held desire to pass down the invaluable knowledge he had accumulated during his years in the business world to his sons while working side-by-side with them.
Tom enjoyed playing golf and had memberships at St. Clair Country Club, Laurel Valley Golf Club, Sankaty Head Golf Club and the Bay Colony Golf Club. He served on the Board of Governors of St. Clair Country Club, and as its President in 2002-2003. He was also an active member of the Duquesne Club, the H-Y-P Allegheny Club, the Rivers Club, the Newcomen Society and the BOF.
Tom and his wife, Ginnie, loved to travel together, and they particularly enjoyed taking cruises and seeing distant parts of the world. They also enjoyed vacations on Nantucket together, where they had a summer home surrounded by beautiful flower gardens that were a source of much joy to Tom and his family.
Tom was a pillar of the Pittsburgh community who quietly impacted so many people and organizations throughout his lifetime. He was well known for his incredible sense of humor and the seemingly endless wealth of stories he told. He was a fount of wisdom and knowledge, and could more than hold his own conversing on almost any subject imaginable. He was a charismatic public speaker and would often delight a crowd with his insights. Tom was a devoted husband and father to his three children and was adored by his ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who all knew him as "Big Tom."
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Ginnie; his parents and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his children, Thomas David Wright, Jr. (Yi), Melissa Wright Dailey (Paul), and Steven Bingham Wright (Ginny); his grandchildren, Lydia Penrose Borovina (Adrien), James Chapin Wright (Johanna), Andrew Davis Wright, Olivia Hills Wright, Ryan Thomas Dailey, Alexa Penrose Dailey, Quinn Andariese Dailey, Christopher Thomas Wright, Caroline Renee Wright and Kendall Marie Wright; and his great-grandchildren, Greyson Anton Borovina and Eliana Beth Borovina. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Stillwagon (the late James); his brother-in-law, Clement Andariese Penrose III (Jan); two first cousins, Margaret "Peggy" Wright Rogers and Sara McGill Christy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Thank you to everyone at Care From My Heart for all of their help, dedication and support in caring for Tom and Ginnie over the past few years. We also appreciate the care he received at Friendship Village during his final days.
