THOMAS J. "TIM"

Thomas J. "Tim" Maloney II passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 27. Born and raised in Upper St. Clair, Tim was the second of five children and the only son, growing up surrounded by four sisters who loved him dearly. He was part of a family that shared a passion for sports, and from an early age Tim embraced that enthusiasm. An outstanding all-around athlete, he played football, baseball, basketball, and ran track during his years at Upper St. Clair High School. Tim continued his education at Bethany College in West Virginia, where he played football while earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.

Following college, Tim joined his family's business, The Card Center, a chain of Hallmark greeting card stores serving downtown Pittsburgh and communities throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. After the business closed in 2004, when he began his second career with Steel Sales in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he worked until the COVID-19 pandemic which led to the beginning of his retirement.

Tim had a curious mind and was a lifelong learner with an insatiable appetite for reading, enjoying everything from classic literature and contemporary fiction to history, politics, and biographies. His inquisitive nature led him to become exceptionally knowledgeable about countless subjects. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of football and baseball and delighted in sharing fascinating facts and stories that made every conversation more interesting. Beyond sports, he enjoyed classical music, PBS programming, British mystery series, and keeping up with current events and politics. He appreciated thoughtful discussion and never stopped asking questions or seeking to understand the world around him.

Tim was, above all, a genuinely good man. He had an easy sense of humor, a quick wit, and a remarkable ability to listen. Friends and family knew they could count on him for thoughtful conversation, steady support, and genuine interest in their lives. He built lasting friendships beginning in high school, with his neighborhood friends at Cappy's, and with the many people whose lives he touched over the years. Wherever he went, he was deeply loved by those fortunate enough to know him.

Some of Tim's happiest memories were made while traveling abroad with his sisters. Those adventures reflected his love of exploring new places, experiencing different cultures, and, most importantly, spending time with the people he loved.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Joyce Maloney and Mary Dee (Lyden) Maloney, and his nephew, Matthew Beckovich. He is survived by his sisters, Colleen (Edward) Williamson, Kathy (Dan) Beckovich, Maureen Maloney, and Patty (Matt Knoblock) Maloney; his nieces and nephews, Kate Williamson (Adam D'Antonio), Keri (Wes) Nugent, Mary Knoblock, Brian (Anne Kozil) Williamson, Colin (Ann Kowalecki) Williamson, and PJ (Melissa Stephens) Williamson; and their families.

Tim will be remembered for his faithfulness, kindness, quiet generosity, and unwavering loyalty to his family and friends. Though his passing leaves a tremendous void, his kindness, curiosity, generosity, and quiet grace will live on in the countless lives he touched. He will be remembered with love, gratitude, and many smiles.

Friends and family are welcome on Wednesday, August 12, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com). Funeral Thursday, August 13, 2026, Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, of St. Jude Parish at the corner of Walnut Street and Shady Avenue, at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to WQED Public Television Pittsburgh or to Catholic Charities in Tim's memory.
