William A. "Bill" Holzapfel, Sr., age 84, of the West End, and of Crafton Heights, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, in Daniels, West Virginia, on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
Son of the late John O. and Sarah E. (McKenna) Holzapfel. Bill was the beloved husband and best friend of 62 years, to the late Ruth Marie (Maurer) Holzapfel, whom he missed dearly. Loving father of Cheryl (the late John) Weaver, Dianne (Ray) Killmeyer, William (Jen) Holzapfel II and the late Ruth Ann Holzapfel. Bill was a very proud and the most cherished Pap of 15 grandchildren: Raymond, Gary, Amanda, William III, Julia, Tabitha, Harlen, Danielle, Cherilyn, Marissa, Juan, Luisa, Derek, Garrett, and the late Sarah. Adored "2 Pap" of 19 great-grandchildren, with the blessing of one additional great-grandchild joining the family later this year. Beloved brother of Francis (Pat) Holzapfel, Patricia (Fred) Rios, James (Nancy) Holzapfel, Margaret (Fred) Harke, Michael D. (Colleen) Holzapfel, Timothy P. (Ronnie) Holzapfel, and the late Mary Jane (Paul) Dulavitch, Catherine Holzapfel, Thomas (Eileen) Holzapfel, Sarah (surviving spouse, Jim) Essel, Ellen (Mel) Braun, Irma (Bill) Sanders, John Holzapfel, and Joseph Holzapfel.
Bill is also survived by his sister-in-law, Louise (Kevin) Gargis, numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Bill was a strong, dependable, devoted, and caring father figure to Walter Gardner, Herbie Schmidt, Melissa Plunko, and many others over the years. Bill not only opened up his home and his heart, but he provided love, stability, guidance and support, that left a lasting impression on so many. He will be truly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Bill found great joy and embraced in life's simple pleasures. From traveling with his family to their Lakehouse, visiting his family in Syracuse, NY, and taking trips to Niagara Falls. Bill was an active member of the St. James Men's Club, located in the West End of Pittsburgh, where he participated in softball games, greeted the youth at the general admission desk, and was the Chairman of the roller-skating program at the Quonset Hut, in the West End. Bill enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes at family events, and cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Above all, Bill enjoyed nothing more than to spend quality time with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, creating memories that his family will forever cherish.
