WILLIAM E.

William Edward "Bill" Coyle died on August 22, 2025, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was 98. He was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen (Gregg) Coyle; father of the late William E. Coyle, Jr.; son of the late Francis G. and Teresa M. (Tassinari) Coyle; brother to the late Francis G. Coyle and James P. Coyle; nephew of the late James P. Coyle and Catherine E. Coyle; and grandnephew to the late Rt. Rev. Monsignor William E. Corr and Agnes (Corr) Lynch.

Bill was born in Taunton, Massachusetts, on April 23, 1927, where he attended St. Mary's grammar school, Monsignor James Coyle High School and Cardinal Farley Military Academy in Rhinecliff, NY. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was posted to Tubabao Naval Receiving Station in Samar, Philippines, where he served in the security department and later aboard USS SC-773 (a sub chaser). Upon being honorably discharged in 1946, he attended Seton Hall College in New Jersey, earning a bachelor of science in English in 1949.

Returning to Massachusetts, Bill became a teacher in the Taunton public schools, but in 1951, he was recalled to active duty for service during the Korean War. After a second honorable discharge, Bill earned a master's degree in education in 1953 from Bridgewater State Teacher's College and resumed teaching in Taunton, where he met his future wife and fellow teacher, Kathleen Gregg. On June 20, 1953, Bill and Kathleen were married at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Taunton.

In 1955, Bill enrolled at the University of Notre Dame Law School in South Bend, Indiana, where he and his family lived in veterans' on-campus housing known as "Vetville." He later transferred to the University of Miami School of Law, where he attended night classes and taught junior high school during the day. He earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1959 and began his professional career with the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C.

In 1964, Bill and his family relocated to Pittsburgh, where he accepted a position with Gulf Oil Corporation as the supervisor of corporate taxes. He later joined PPG Industries as assistant tax counsel and manager of international taxes. In 1980, he became the manager of international taxes for Allegheny Ludlum Industries. Following his corporate career, he worked for the state of Florida's tax office in Pittsburgh until fully retiring.

Bill's professional memberships included the Florida Bar, the Federal Bar Association, the Pittsburgh chapter of the Tax Executives Institute, and he was admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the Tax Court of the United States and the Supreme Court of the United States.

A communicant of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church in Pittsburgh, Bill was past president of the Holy Name Society. In 1971, he organized the society's annual stag fish fry and sports night, where the late Auxiliary Bishop Anthony Bosco was guest of honor. During dinner, the bishop commented to Bill that the event seemed too sports-oriented. Without missing a beat, Bill replied, "Mens sana in corpore sano," a Latin phrase meaning "a healthy mind in a healthy body." Surprised and impressed with Bill's retort and knowledge of Latin, the bishop chuckled and heartily agreed.

Bill managed the South Hills Elks little league baseball team in Bethel Park, where he coached both his sons. He was a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and very knowledgeable about clockworks and proud of his array of antique watches and clocks. A Pittsburgh Steeler season ticket holder since 1969, he and his family attended many games at Three Rivers Stadium and Heinz Field. He traveled to Tempe, AZ, with Kathleen for Super Bowl XXX, and in 2006 with his sons and grandson at his side, he attended Super Bowl XL in Detroit, where he watched the Steelers defeat the Seattle Seahawks.

Bill is survived by his son, retired Navy Cmdr. Frank Coyle (Adelfa) of Virginia Beach; a grandson, Navy Cmdr. Frank Coyle (Kelly) of Leonardtown, Maryland; a granddaughter Alexandra Coyle of Los Angeles; great-grandchildren, Nina, Giuliana and Frank of Leonardtown; nephews, Thomas (Sandra) Coyle and Michael (Theresa) Coyle of California; step-great-grandchildren, Sidney and Ofelia Pollard, Roland and Beatrix Forgey and Avery and Lydia Lopez, all of Richmond, VA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Massachusetts, Georgia, Indiana and California.

The family thanks the kind and caring staff of Whitetail Springs Memory Care Community, where Bill lived since January 2024. A very warm thanks to Nurse Amber Mutchler of Commonwealth Hospice, who was Bill's primary caregiver and special friend until the end. Thanks also to Chaplain Devon Jefferies and social worker, Deb Russo-Dicken also of Commonwealth Hospice and the staff of Resurrection Parish and Our Lady of Hope Parish.

Vigil Service (Viewing) at BEINHAUERS FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2828 Washington Rd., McMurray, on Monday, August 25, 2025, from 6-8PM. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony's Church in Taunton, MA, followed by the Rite of Committal and interment at St. Francis Cemetery in Taunton, will occur at a later date.
